Exeter College sought to create high-quality, industry-standard healthcare training facilities through the refurbishment of an existing building to accommodate Baker's Ward, a realistic clinical teaching environment for learners pursuing careers in healthcare. The project also included the development of new life sciences laboratories to support advanced practical teaching and apprenticeship programmes.
Design Foundry were appointed to deliver the mechanical and electrical design for the scheme, working closely with the wider project team to coordinate services within the constraints of the existing building fabric. To maximise teaching flexibility, we developed a high-level radiant panel heating solution, freeing valuable floor and wall space while maintaining occupant comfort and supporting the specialist requirements of healthcare and laboratory education.

The Ted Wragg Building project demonstrates how thoughtful MEP design can unlock the potential of existing buildings to deliver modern, specialist learning environments. By carefully coordinating services within the constraints of the refurbishment and developing innovative heating solutions, Design Foundry helped Exeter College create flexible, industry-standard facilities that support both healthcare and life sciences education.
Our work enabled the successful transformation of the building into a high-quality teaching environment, providing realistic clinical training spaces and advanced laboratory facilities while maximising usable teaching areas, maintaining occupant comfort, and supporting the evolving needs of learners, staff, and apprenticeship programmes.
