Saltash School was established in 1965 following the merger of Saltash Grammar School and the Secondary Modern School. It became a comprehensive school in 1968, relocating to its current site, and in 2011 converted to an academy, now operating as Saltash Community School.
We were engaged by Kendall Kingscott to support the school’s expansion on a constrained site. Our brief focused on delivering sustainable, modern, and flexible teaching spaces that reflect the school’s ethos and values.
The project required careful planning and innovative design solutions to maximise space, enhance learning environments, and create a future-proofed facility that meets the evolving needs of students and staff.

Our design scope focused on BB101, which provides the regulatory framework for school ventilation in support of the Building Regulations, offering guidance on ventilation, thermal comfort, and indoor air quality. It sets out performance standards to ensure healthy indoor environments for learning. The client preferred to avoid an MVHR solution due to future maintenance considerations, so we adopted a cross-ventilation strategy with high-level roof terminals.
To validate this approach, we carried out detailed thermal modelling and collaborated closely with KK to integrate both ventilation and natural daylighting into the façade design. We also incorporated high-quality lighting, energy monitoring, and extensive new infrastructure to fully support the operation of the building.
